Corazon moves to Downtown East
Since June 2005, Corazon, a shop featuring gifts and art displays, has been located on the North end of Washington Avenue. However, this location will close on May 24 and re-locate and open June 2 at its new location in the Bridgewater building at 1026 Washington Ave. S.
Hilary Brasel, buyer/manager for Corazon, said it will be nice to be in a growing location and close to a lot of art within the block, including the Guthrie and the Center for Book Arts. Though it will be sad to leave the old location, the three-year lease is up and the entire block is going up for sale.
Brasel is excited for the possibilities the store can explore at the new site. Corazon is working on including a computer resource center with a visual gallery of past artists that have shown at the old location as well as the new location and the one that is on Lake Street. With this resource center, Brasel hopes the new location will “become a resource for local artists and connect people back to the artists,” though it may take a while to complete. Corazon also hopes to include a reception space for local artists to teach classes.
There is no grand opening planned as of yet; however, Corazon hopes to have one sometime this summer. This location will host an artist reception for Joel Kaplan on June 14 from 4–8 p.m. in conjunction with the Stone Arch Festival. Kaplan will be the first artist exhibiting at the new location and will have his art displayed until July 7.
According to Brasel, the new space will be familiar, though it will be missing the character that comes from being located in an old building. However, the new building is still charming and gives Corazon a chance to be more energy-efficient. The entire first floor of the Bridgewater building hosts various retail shops and offers 25 off-street parking spaces.
