PPERRIA launches Luxton Park book exchange
The Prospect Park/East River Road Improvement Association (PPERRIA) is in need of book donations to contribute to their new Luxton Park book exchange program.
The exchange began in June and is located in the park building at Luxton Park. The library currently has approximately 230 books available for the taking, and they receive new books all the time. Genres range from children’s stories to adult mysteries, cooking, poetry and even Harry Potter.
PPERRIA board member Dean Abrahamson, who helped launch the program, said books for young adults are especially needed.
The books are organized by age group currently, but Abrahamson hopes to get everything organized by genre, perhaps by a volunteer such as a retired librarian. There is no record of books or visitors to the library, but there are a few rules to keep in mind before you participate. Everyone should feel free to take a book, but the hope is that they will, in turn, bring a book for someone else to take. All books brought in must be suitable to be around children. The book exchange does not accept textbooks, encyclopedias, dictionaries or magazines.
Abrahamson believes the exchange is necessary now that the Southeast library is only open a few days a week, making it difficult for kids to hang out and spend time around books. Luxton Park attracts many children due to the activities offered inside the building, including basketball, foosball and supervised computer activities.
