Kicking off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and KidsFest on Jan. 5, this week-long celebration will feature a battle of the bands, community concerts and a “Music Marathon.” Highlights from the celebration lineup include a jazz-focused day (Jan. 8), a day devoted to classical music (Jan. 9) and a rock music day (Jan. 11).

The MacPhail Center for Music, which has existed for close to a century, offers musical instruction for groups and individuals. According to its website, the Center also has partnerships with schools and arts organizations. Back in September of 2006, nearly 400 people attended the groundbreaking ceremony at the school’s new location, 501 S. Second St. The new building offers 55,000 square-feet of space overlooking the downtown riverfront.
